Portions of the 400 hours of footage — from Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Mississippi, and Louisiana — were edited into the 1991 television series "American Patchwork," but the lion's share has never been seen publicly. It will be presented by an archivist and producer from the Alan Lomax Archive, who will screen a selected program of this rare material. Stick around after the screening for an informal sharing of songs and stories from round these parts and beyond. I've not been able to find any other screenings but there may be some around the country - let me know if you find any! For more general access, ACE (Association for Cultural Equity) has launched an Alan Lomax Archive channel on YouTube. Featuring clips selected from the 400 hours of raw footage shot for Lomax's PBS American Patchwork series, the channel provides an introduction to the diverse cast of musicians, singers, dancers, story-tellers, and one-of-a-kind characters filmed by Alan and crew between 1978 and 1985, as well as an entree into the Video Catalog portion of ACE's Research Center. The first uploads include performances by Hill Country bluesman R.L. Burnside, old-time fiddler Tommy Jarrell, ballads by Sheila Kay Adams and Cas Wallin, former Mississippi Sheik Sam Chatmon, union activist and singer Nimrod Workman, hot jazz bassist Chester Zardis, and the White Eagles Mardi Gras Indians. http://www.youtube.com/user/AlanLomaxArchive *************************************** Moonshine Creek will play more Old Time American Roots & Rebel Songs - Thursday 20th October 2011 @ 9.00pm at The Golden Ball, Cromwell Road, York. As always, everyone is welcome to come along... sing, whoop, holler, or just stamp your feet! http://www.myspace.com/moonshinecreek *************************************** Bill Malone's book Music from the True Vine: Mike Seeger's Life and Musical Journey is now out in the world. A musician, documentarian, scholar, and one of the founding members of the influential folk revival group the New Lost City Ramblers, Mike Seeger (1933-2009) spent more than fifty years collecting, performing, and commemorating the culture and folk music of white and black southerners, which he called "music from the true vine." In this fascinating biography, Bill Malone explores the life and musical contributions of folk artist Seeger, son of musicologists Charles and Ruth Crawford Seeger and brother of folksingers Pete and Peggy Seeger. Malone argues that Seeger, while not as well known as his brother, may be more important to the history of American music through his work in identifying and giving voice to the people from whom the folk revival borrowed its songs. Seeger recorded and produced over forty albums, including the work of artists such as Libba Cotten, Tommy Jarrell, Dock Boggs, and Maybelle Carter. In 1958, with an ambition to recreate the southern string bands of the twenties, he formed the New Lost City Ramblers, helping to inspire the urban folk revival of the sixties. Music from the True Vine presents Seeger as a gatekeeper of American roots music and culture, showing why generations of musicians and fans of traditional music regard him as a mentor and an inspiration. http://uncpress.unc.edu/browse/author_interview?title_id=2640 *************************************** Musically Monstrous Promotions have Bruce Molsky booked to play at the Three Horseshoes in Towersey on 19th November 2011. http://www.musicallymonstrous.co.uk/ 01844 346897 and 07905 945493 *************************************** Bruce Molksy's tour dates are: Oct 25 Canterbury Festival, Canterbury, Kent Oct 26 Magpie's Nest, Old Queen?s Head, 44 Essex Road, London, Nl 8LN Oct 27 Redbourn Folk Club, The Hollybush Public House, Redbourn (near St Albans) Oct 30 Lakeland Fiddlers Workshop, Kendal, Cumbria Nov 01 Woodend Barn, Burn O Bennie, Banchory, AB31 5QA Nov 02 Eastgate Theatre & Arts Centre, Eastgate, Peebles, EH45 8AD Nov 03 The Old Laundry Theatre, Crag Brow, Bowness on Windermere, LA23 3BX Nov 04 Lichfield Guildhall, Bore Street, Lichfield WS13 6LU Nov 06 The Maltings Theatre & Arts Centre, Berwick-upon-Tweed, TD15 1AJ Nov 07 The Sage, Gateshead , Tyne & Wear, NE8 2JR Nov 08 Eden Court, Bishops Road, Inverness Nov 09 Universal Hall, Findhorn Foundation, Forres, Findhorn, IV36 3TZ Nov 10 The Star, St Andrews in the Square, Glasgow Nov 11 The Tolbooth, Jail Wynd, Stirling, FK8 1DE Nov 12 Sabhal M'r Ostaig, Isle of Skye Nov 13 Rosehall Community Arts, Achness Hotel, Rosehall, Sunderland Nov 15 The Basement, The City Screen, York, YO1 9LQ Nov 16 Red Lion Folk Club, Kings Heath, Birmingham B14 7LY Nov 17 The Met, Derby Hall Market Street, Bury BL9 0BW Nov 18 Philharmonic Hall, Rodewald Suite, Liverpool L1 9BP NOv 19 Three Horseshoes, Towersey, Oxfordshire OX9 3QY Nov 20 Twickfolk, Cabbage Patch Pub, Twickenham, Middlesex TW1 3SZ further details at http://www.brucemolsky.com *************************************** A two day residential workshop in Fiddle and Appalachian Flatfooting in Grantham, Lincs. is being planned for the weekend of 28/29th April 2012. Road, York on Thursday 6 October 28 July. This is a continuing fortnightly
residency so they look forward to seeing you soon if you can’t get to
the next one. Start around 9 and absolutely free. *************************************** From Mark Wallace:
I've previously mentioned the idea of having a participatory event where
we all get a chance to get up and do our stuff and it is now going to
happen on Saturday 29th of October at the Three Horseshoes, Towersey,
Oxfordshire. We'll start at three in the afternoon and continue through
the evening until probably 9:30, all dependant on how many people want
to play and for how long. We'll probably have a bit of an old-time/bluegrass
session in there as well. To keep things simple I am looking at using
a single mic setup but if people need their own mics or DIs we can manage
that as long as it doesn't get too complicated. Let me know if you'd like
to take part, what you do and how long you'd like to play for. *************************************** Gillian Welch on tour
