If you did my mandolin workshop at Gainsborough, the process of putting tab & audio on the www.foaotmad.org.uk website has started with the Beginners material on the Resources page. The remainder will follow shortly. Be warned, it is fairly basic and should be treated as a reminder rather than an exact science!

Carole Chant's guest on her radio programme, Sound Out, this Friday, 26th March, will be our very own President Tom Paley. Listen on Resonance Radio 104.4fm or http://www.resonacefm.com. Don't miss it!

From Bluegrass Ireland....

Here is a short Youtube link to a trailer for a new tv documentary about the banjo, being produced by Tony Trischka. Steve Martin narrates.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqRL3N1veSA

The trailer is a good nine minutes long, it includes footage of Pete Seeger, Bela Fleck, Taj Mahal, and many others. The full documentary will be eagerly awaited; if it surpasses the hour-long 'Echoes of America' film on the same subject, made twenty years ago, it will be a real classic.

From Kate Lissauer:

BUFFALO GALS

The last stop on our series of village hall visits occurs this Saturday, March 27, at Bighton Village Hall.  It's near Basingstoke.  A small place, so the hall will be easy to find, but for any information or tickets, contact Geoff Buss on 01962 734 853 or

Please make a special effort to come out to this performance, because the promoters said they never have more than X number of people, and they sounded a little sad about that, and apologetic.  We don't mind how many people are there, but let's give them a nice surprise for this, especially because it's our...

....penultimate gig before taking a break for a few months, to work on our next album and other projects!  It is also our last gig for that time as the full-blown lineup of Buffalo Gals, because our dear banjo-playing bison Johnny Whelan must have hand surgery in early April.  We'll be joined by the inimitable Simon Fosse on five-string banjo for our last gig of the season...

....The American Museum in Britain, on Sunday, April 11.  Part of the Museum's great series of Sunday concerts.  Concert included in admission to the Museum.  2pm, in the Lecture Hall.  Claverton Manor, Bath, BA2 7BD.

SPAIN

We have room for one or two more at La Fuente De Musica, May 2-9, With Dave Bing and Kate Lissauer teaching banjo and fiddle.  See www.katelissauer.com for more information, or contact Kate by

We have plenty of space at the moment for Beverly Smith and Carl Jones' workshop, September 25-October 2.  (Please not that these dates were posted incorrectly in some mails and on Kate's website.  These ARE the correct dates.)  Classes will be in banjo, fiddle, guitar, mandolin, and singing.  See as above for more information.  This class will fill, so make your intentions known as early as you can.

The George in South Molton on Saturday 20th March.

Will Kaufman will be presenting his multi-media musical documentary Woody Guthrie: Hard Times and Hard Travellin’.  This highly acclaimed show sets the songs of Woody Guthrie in the context of 1930s’ America – the Dust Bowl, the Depression, the New Deal and the state of popular music itself.  Will’s rendition of songs from Guthrie and others, buttressed by detailed historical commentary, exemplify the blending of music and radical politics that marks Guthrie’s most powerful and evocative work.

Will Kaufman is from New Jersey, and has been a semi-professional singer and musician for over thirty years, being equally at home on guitar, fiddle, banjo or mandolin.

Tickets are £6 in advance (£5 to Shammick Acoustic members) and are available direct from The George Hotel or online from www.wegottickets/event/59007, or £7 at the door.

Michi Mathias is running the London Marathon and raising money for a small charity for disabled people in Lewes, Sussex.  Some of you have been asking her for this info, so here it is for those interested.

The Oyster Project is a group of people with various disabilities who organise things they want to do or learn or get involved in, whether it's working on an allotment,  watercolour painting, cooking, IT skills, going for wheelchair-accessible walks, seeing films, setting up an internet radio station, camping.... whatever the members want to find a way to do.  It's fairly new and not very well-known yet, but Michi has been going to their drop-in cafe once a week and am really impressed with the energy and creativity.  It's all being done with little money and a great deal of volunteer effort, so anything she can raise for them will go a long way.
