Colm Daly's Pickin 3rd Sunday approaches...
You are invited to come to the next one, 19th June from 1pm at The Retreat
Pub in Reading, Berkshire.
This is an open session for pickers and dancers of early mountain and
roots music from America. The Retreat Pub is the default venue unless
otherwise stated. Kicking off time is around 1pm, going on till around
5pm or longer. Bernie and Jane who run this quiet backstreet pub (they
call it Reading's best kept secret) specialise in real ales and are great
patrons of local live music.
The Retreat address is: 8 St. Johns St, Reading, Berkshire, RG1 4EH (see
map link below)

It is near Queens Road car park , so if you come by train it is almost
diagonally on the other side of the town centre, about a ten minute walk.
By car it's easy to over-shoot, so the simplest way and also for finding
safe parking is to:
- Come into East Reading on the A329M from Junction 10 on the M4; or on
theA4 via Maidenhead (both approaches merge at a large roundabout with
traffic lights) and take the London Road exit.
- Go straight over at the next large junction (with Pub almost in the
centre).
- take the right-hand lane and turn into Eldon Road at the first filter
light.
- find parking on second right turning called Eldon Terrace
- use the commercial parking lot on the left just before the Eldon Pub.
- walk back crossing Eldon Road into St Johns Road and St. John's St is
2nd on the right.
Future Dates:
16th July Goring (near Reading ) - PICKIN' 3RD SUNDAY ; actually a Saturday
in fact, at Goring Regatta.
31st July Reading - Colm's place - GOMAD 2005 - Social & Pickin' Party;
from midday till late.
21st Aug Reading - 3rd Sunday Pickin' Lunch - The Retreat Pub.

Black string bands - a nearly forgotten legacy - played for frolics, parades,
square dances and were vital parts of their peoples lives into the
1950s.
In the spirit of independent, community-based music comes Sankofa Strings,
a trio of African American artists in love with self-made music. Armed
with fiddles and banjos, bones and drums, Sankofa Strings is taking that
Old Time sound and using it to bring the people together again.
They draw upon the string and vocal traditions of the Americas, Africa
and Europe: string band standards, blues, hokum tunes and anonymous folk
songs slide next to new interpretations of Afro-Pop, sea shanties and
Celtic ballads.
Sounds fun and I'm looking forward to there being some sound clips on
the web site.

Hobgoblin Music would like you to know that their 14th Catalogue is now
available. It includes photos of hundreds of musical instruments, spares
and books, with descriptions, prices, and a wealth of advice on choosing
an instrument, and lots of helpful information. Now a handy A5 size, it
is currently being mailed out to thousands of folk music lovers across
the country. The catalogue is available from all Hobgoblin shops, from
the Hobgoblin festival stand throughout the summer and by post (call 0845
130 9500 or email catalogues@hobgoblin.co.uk
www.hobgoblin.com
Hobgoblin are also sponsors of the revamped Sidmouth Festival, now entitled
Sidmouth Folkweek and with an ever-growing line-up (although I'm not aware
of any oldtime - there's a couple of clogging teams there though) and
I summarise their press release here:
Tickets will be available for each individual event, and most can be booked
in advance. All events at the Ham Arena Marquee, and most events elsewhere
will have tickets on the door as well, so less organised people can easily
enjoy the music without pre-booking! Tickets for afternoon events range
between £7.00 and £12.00. You can also buy a season ticket
for the Ham Arena Marquee, which replaces the old Knowle Arena as the
main festival stage, for £135. This ticket covers all afternoon
and evening events at the Ham, including workshops and the Hobgoblin Stage.
All advance tickets are available by calling Sidmouth Tourist Information
Centre on 01395 578627 and in addition for Hobgoblin Stage tickets you
can also call Hobgoblin Music on 0845 130 9500. Concessions: Youth tickets
(for under 18s) are all half price. Members of the Sidmouth Folkweek 2005
Supporters Club will get priority
bookings, and concessions on ticket prices. It costs £20 to join,
see www.sidmouthfolkweek.co.uk/supporters.html for more information.
A completely free colour programme of events, with a booking form, is
available. You will find the programme being distributed at festivals
and in shops, and if you send a stamped, addressed A5 envelope to Tourist
Information, Ham Lane, Sidmouth, EX10 8XR, you can have one sent to you!
You can also call the Tourist Information Office to book tickets on 01395
578627. The official website for the Sidmouth Folk Week is www.sidmouthfolkweek.co.uk
Now, for my own 'bit' - some of the south west oldtime crowd may be there
all week but more likely will be just down to session on the first weekend.
There's a chance we may be able to takeover the Bedford Hotel bar as we
have done before but if the weather is good we may just be on the seafront.
I'll try and get more info as we get nearer.
