24th June

Mark Tanner would like folks to know that the 1st Old time and Bluegrass pickin' weekend at Wiston Lodge was a great success and many thanks to the FOAoTMAD players who turned up. They are already making plans to repeat the experience next year at the same time, that being the 3rd weekend in June, and look out for the write up in the Old Time news.... They'd love to see more of you there next year so make a note in your diaries.

Is anyone out there interested to call a square dance at the North Atlantic Fiddle Convention, Aberdeen? The dance is on the evening of Thursday 15th July. The dance will be half old England and half New England. They have a caller for the old English dances but need a square dance specialist to call for about an hour. The band is a scratch band with Sophy and Emily Ball, Paul Burgess, Helmut Rheingans, Will Duke, and Scott Hartley. (Although I hear rumours that the old time side of things will be to Bruce Molksy's fiddling) asap

Larry Hanks' Summer 2010 UK "Boll Weevil" Tour begins on Tuesday, 15 June. There'a a large number of changes since I listed it before so here it is afresh:

Larry Hanks has made his living singing and playing traditional songs of the American West, Cowboy and Miner’s songs; including many songs in tribute to the working man, the music of Utah Phillips, Sam Hinton, and Malvina Reynolds.  He is known for his deep, resonant bass voice, sparse and tasteful guitar playing, accomplished Jew’s Harpery, and careful selection of meaningful repertoire.

He has performerd with Jody Stecher, John Wright and Gordon Bok, and was one of the Sweets Mill String Band (with Kenny Hall).  He was also a one-time member of the Fat City Stringband, predecessor of the Highwoods Stringband, about 1970.

Issy Emeney would like to report that that the flatfooting workshop she ran in May went very well. She had a mixture of complete newcomers to Appalachian clogging and some dancers from other appalachian sides and even some Morris dancers!  They are all keen to carry on so she is starting regular daytime lessons, the first one being Friday 25th June at Weare Memorial Hall near Cheddar. If any cloggers would be interested in goming, please would they give her a ring 01934 741551 or drop me a line.

She is also doing another one-day workshop on November 27th at Weare.

The Editor of Old Time News presents his apologies to those of you who are holding your breath for the Summer Issue. He is delighted to report that there is a lot to go in the magazine this time but putting it all together is being delayed by those involved going on holiday. As the Editor is one of those, as a penance, he will listen to "Old Joe Clark" twenty times and if he is still sane after that, will make every effort to publish the magazine in mid July.

As mentioned last week, Tony Thomas will be giving workshops at the Sweet Sunny South festival (Hastings 10th-12th Sept). One is expected to be about Gus Cannon, five string banjo playing and the Blues. This would feature explaining how African American five string banjoists confronted the development of the Blues in general as well as approaches to play the blues on a five string banjo for today but also focusing on the playing that Gus Cannon did in his 1927-1930 recordings. The other is expected to be a presentation on African American traditional banjo playing in history, discussing a few of the players and general approaches involved in the style and demonstrating a few approaches to playing. It is hoped to include unissued field recordings and (technology permitting) video of several of the traditional players.

Lois Ann Olmstead lives in east London (E1) and would be really grateful for a lift to Summer Camp with her 7 year old son. She is flexible about the number of days to be there and could make her way to another part of London if that is easier. If you can help, please contact her direct by
